Shiny Lip Balms and Glosses May Actually Attract UV Rays

Wear sunscreen on your face everyday? Think you’re covered? Well think again. How do you protect your lips from the sun? Most women think their balms and glosses have got them covered, but experts say they’re dangerously mistaken.

Newswise — Wear sunscreen on your face everyday? Think you’re covered? Well think again.

How do you protect your lips from the sun? Most women think their balms and glosses have got them covered, but experts say they’re dangerously mistaken.

Certain Lip balms and glosses can actually increase your chances of developing a skin cancer.

“Many people do use sunscreen; however they tend to forget their lips,” says Christine Brown, M.D., dermatologist on the medical staff at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.

According to a recent study, less than one-in-four Americans wear some form of lip protection. Experts say this is concerning since the lips are not only more susceptible to aging from chronic sun damage, but are also more prone to developing serious cancers.

“When skin cancer occurs on the lower lip it has the potential to be much more aggressive and metastasize to surrounding lymph nodes,” adds Dr. Brown.

What’s worse—many of us unknowingly attract the sun’s rays to our lips by using balms and glosses.

“What most people don’t realize is they’re actually increasing light penetration through the lip surface by applying something clear and shiny to them,” explains Dr. Brown.

In fact, dermatologists advise that women should avoid wearing glossy lipsticks in the sun altogether unless they have a layer of sun protection on underneath.

“For people who are planning to be outdoors for more than 20 minutes at a time—they really should have a specific lip sun block with an SPF of 30 ideally,” says Dr. Brown.

To protect your lips, Dr. Brown says the first thing you need to do is get a lip balm or a lip sunscreen that has an SPF of 30. You should apply it in the morning under any lipsticks or lip glosses and then reapply throughout the day just as you would a lip color. Remember, it is just as important as wearing sunscreen on your face and body.

So what are the signs you may have developed a skin cancer on your lip?

First of all, skin cancers are more likely to appear on the lower lip. If you have any changes to the color of the lip surface—if an area turns opaque or white—or if you have persistent peeling or flaking of a spot on your lip—you should have it checked by a dermatologist.

 Protecting Against Melanoma this May

Did you know that if you have had two or more blistering sunburns by age 10 your chances of developing skin cancer as an adult are greatly increased? In 2009 63,000 people were diagnosed with melanoma. Today, Melanoma is the fastest growing cancer around the world. Many people think that Melanoma only affects Caucasians, but Melanoma can affect men and women of all races and ages.

However, Melanoma is a preventable condition. May is national Melanoma Awareness Month and our friends at the Goco Center for Aesthetics offer a wide range of products to keep you and your family safe while you enjoy the Tennessee Summer.

The first line of defense against skin cancer is an effective sunscreen. While you can pick up a bottle of sunscreen at any drugstore, the quality of the product you are using is essential when it comes to protecting your skin.

The first thing you want to look at on a bottle of sunscreen is its SPF or sun protection factor. The SPF tells you exactly how long you are protected from UV rays. An SPF of 15 allows you to stay in the sun 15 times longer than normally recommended.

While SPF 15 may sound like plenty of protection, the rating is based on applying a very liberal amount of lotion every 90 minutes. If a person was to follow the exact directions on a bottle of sunscreen they would use half a bottle for just one day in the sun.

Luckily, Goco Center for Aesthetics offers more powerful products that really make a difference in the battle against skin cancer. For all over protection Obagi offers Sunshield SPF 50, a Zinc Oxide blend protection. This is a classic lotion that works to protect all skin types.

For an even more advanced protection, Goco Center for Aesthetics offers Colorescience mineral UV protection. Colorescience makes sun protection mineral sunscreen that provides high quality UV protection with Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. With absolutely zero dry time, all you have to do is apply the minerals, and then head out on your way.

Colorescience offers sun protection for all different complexions. You can choose a tone to add pigment to your skin or to match your natural color. Colorescience is a great item for both men and women. Golfers particularly enjoy the product because it allows them to protect their hands without the grease that some lotions produce.

When most people think about sun damage they think about days at the beach and parties at the lake. In reality, UV is a constant part of our lives. From sun shining in the office window to rays leaking through the driver side glass, we are constantly being affected by UV.

While May is Melanoma month, UV rays can cause more than just cancer. Sunlight is also one of the leading factors when it comes to your skin looking aged. There is no better time to start taking care of your skin than today. To encourage all Middle Tennesseans to protect themselves against UV rays, The Goco Center for Aesthetics is offering 20% off all sunscreen products until May 31st.

SELPHYL – “Using your own platelets & growth factors ”

Move over fillers, there’s a new- all natural- procedure in town.  Used by surgeons over the past ten years to speed up soft- tissue healing from sports injuries, SELPHYL is now being used cosmetically to plump the fine skin around your eyes where other fillers cannot.  In a 20-minute procedure, 9 cubic centimeters of blood (about 1 vial) is drawn, then centrifuged to collect the fibrin and platelets/growth factors, which are injected back into the body to stimulate new blood vessels (angiogenesis) resulting in substantial collagen growth.  AND because this mixture is made up of your blood, there is NO risk of an allergic reaction.  Full plumping happens in 6-8 weeks and lasts for 18 months or more.

For a limited time the INTRODUCTORY Rate for SELPHYL will be $160 off!!!

Call us and schedule a consultation with Dr. Goco NOW to see if SELPHYL is right for you.

Selphyl: The Natural Solution to a Younger more Energetic Look

No one wants to look tired, but in reality, that is just a part of life. If a new mother is up from 2-6am looking after her newborn, she is going to look exhausted. This same tired look is found when we have to work a double shift at work, or when students have to pull an all-nighter. Looking tired is a normal part of everyone’s life, but no one should have to look tired all the time. There’s nothing worse than getting a full night’s sleep, and then being told how tired you look the next day.

People who suffer from chronic bags under their eyes, or lines and wrinkles above their lips, are never able to look as young and energetic as they really are.  Some makeup can attempt to hide these bags and wrinkles, but they only offer a temporary fix. The most well known treatments to correct bags and wrinkles commonly require either surgery or injecting man made fillers into these areas, but now there is Selphyl.

Selphyl is an all-natural way to eliminate that “tired look,” without putting fillers into your body. Selphyl uses your own blood platelets and growth factors to stimulate substantial collagen growth in your problem areas.  This revolutionary treatment is quick and offered by Middle Tennessee’s most trusted facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Paul Goco.  I know some people are hesitant to try any cosmetic procedure, but the steps to getting a young energetic look with Selphyl are simple.

First, Dr. Goco’s team will take a small batch of blood from the patient. This blood is then centrifuged to harvest the platelets and fibrin from your body. Once the platelets have been extracted, they are mixed with a growth stimulant and deposited right into your problem areas, and that’s it. The whole procedure takes about 20 minutes.

Because Selphyl uses your body to plump your skin, the effect will come in at a natural pace. There is almost no healing time, and the benefits of Selphyl last for 18 months or more. Selphyl is the easiest way to look younger and more energetic naturally.  You never have to worry about looking like you had “work done.”

For a limited time, the introductory rate for Selphyl is $160 off at The Goco Center for Aesthetics. So, what are you waiting for? Schedule a consultation with Dr. Paul Goco today, and start on the path towards your natural beauty.

There are a lot of people that will try to tell you they have the secret to loosing inches of fat. But how often do those so called secrets actually work? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could see proof of how a weight loss technique worked before you made a commitment? Well that is exactly what Dr. Paul Goco and his staff are offering at the Goco Center for Aesthetics. One of the great things about Zerona is the guarantee. If you do not lose at least 3 ½ inches, you could qualify for more treatments at no cost to you.

So what is Zerona? Zerona is a pain free laser treatment that drains the fat cells in your body, which results in a loss of inches across your entire body. The inches that you loose from the Zerona treatment are as permanent as losing inches can be. It is up to you to maintain the results.

The entire Zerona treatment takes place over a quick 2 week period which requires 6 brief painless laser treatments. By the 2nd week , patients should start to notice results that would take months of dieting and exercise to achieve. Patients can typically continue to see results for weeks after the treatment is complete.

However, like any technique that reduces inches, Zerona is a tool to help get you to your desired body shape. After the treatments, it is up to the patient to keep up with his or her fitness. That is why Goco Center for Aesthetics has packaged Zerona with a month long membership to Gold’s Gym in Murfreesboro and 6 visits with a personal trainer.

The Goco Center for Aesthetics is the only clinic in Rutherford County that offers the prestigious Zerona treatment. And with one of the most experienced and respected staff in middle Tennessee, a partnership with the Goco Center for Aesthetics means never having to worry about the quality of care you receive.

If Zerona is something you might be interested in, we strongly encourage you to call and RSVP for the Zerona promotional event at The Goco Center for Aesthetics on October 25th at 5:30 pm.
